Most of these new "consultants" had "Golden Parachutes" and didn't really need to work but were much too young to stay home with the wife. They cut the going consulting fees nearly in half. It was a tough time to make a buck. At the same time, many companies were expanding into international oil and gas ventures. They became partners in oil and gas fields that used outdated technology. The big bucks needed to bring in the new technology were available, but the people needed to teach the locals how to use it were not available. I was lamenting this state of affairs to a very senior friend of mine who looked at my situation in a different light. "If you can get these highly experienced guys at cut rate prices, add free international travel as a perk and you can send these guys into the new international joint ventures as mentors."
